CI Aviation explores what exactly base training is, and why it’s necessary

Base training is an important part of a pilot’s initial type rating on a new aircraft. It involves performing a series of take offs and landings in the actual aircraft, not a simulator, under the supervision of a training captain.

It’s typically conducted at quieter airports, making Guernsey and Jersey ideal locations. The training gives pilots valuable hands-on experience with how the aircraft handles during critical phases of flight, particularly take-off, approach, and landing. It is a mandatory requirement for all pilots newly rated on an aircraft type.

The number of circuits (touch and go landings) required is usually around six, in accordance with aviation authority regulations. The training can also require one go around to be performed. Once successfully completed, the pilot is cleared to begin line training, flying with passengers under the supervision of a qualified training captain.

For Aurigny and Blue Islands the typical callsigns associated with this training are:

  • Aurigny: AUR100T
  • Blue Islands: BCI800
